Join renowned painter Richie Carter for an unprecedented, two-part artistic expedition through the breathtaking contrasts of South Africa.
This curated, 10 day luxury retreat is designed for artists seeking both the refined elegance of the Cape Winelands and the untamed rhythm of the African bush. We begin in the historic, mountain-ringed valleys of Stellenbosch, capturing rolling vineyards and iconic coastal cliffs, before flying directly to the Greater Kruger Area to paint the raw, majestic wildlife of the savanna.
As with all Workshops in Africa expeditions, we have meticulously handled every logistical detail. From absolute five-star luxury accommodations to gourmet dining and internal flights, your only responsibility is to set up your easel, breathe in the landscape, and create.
Our journey begins in the heart of the Cape Winelands at the historic Lanzerac Estate. Surrounded by dramatic mountain ranges, historic Cape Dutch architecture, and endless vineyards, this is the perfect setting to ground your practice. Here, we will focus on capturing the vibrant, indigenous floral kingdom and the manicured, grand landscapes of the valley.

From the Cape, we fly directly into the wild. Kapama Private Game Reserve offers an authentic, ultra-luxurious safari experience. Swap the vineyards for the savanna as we transition to capturing the raw, golden light of the bushveld. Thursday, September 9
Arrive at Cape Town International Airport and enjoy a private transfer to the 5-star Lanzerac Estate. Take the afternoon to settle into your luxury suite, explore the manicured grounds, and meet Daniel Keys and your fellow artists for a spectacular welcome dinner in the vineyards.

Friday, September 10
We begin our artistic journey just a short distance from the estate at the breathtaking Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden in Stellenbosch. This world-renowned, 7-hectare botanical paradise perfectly merges monumental bronze artwork with wild, indigenous fynbos, all set against the dramatic backdrop of the rugged Stellenbosch mountains.
This is a breathtaking environment for our first masterclass session. Daniel will lead his opening demonstration nestled among the lush, meandering paths, focusing on how to capture the striking contrast between the delicate indigenous flora, the sweeping light of the valley, and the sculptural elements of the landscape..

Saturday, September 11
A journey down the dramatic Cape Peninsula! We will travel along the rugged, breathtaking coastline to Boulders Beach to visit the famous, charming colony of African Penguins.
After marveling at the wildlife, we will set up our easels overlooking the turquoise waters and giant granite boulders of the coastline, with Daniel guiding you through capturing the striking contrast between the ocean and the rocky shores.

Sunday, September 12
Today, we ascend to the "Roof of the City." We will take the aerial cableway to the top of Table Mountain, one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature, offering sweeping, 360-degree views of the city, ocean, and surrounding peaks.
An unforgettable plein air session capturing the vast, atmospheric perspective and dramatic elevation of the Cape landscape.

Monday, September 13
We slow down the pace with a deeply relaxing day exploring the historic Cape Winelands. Enjoy an exclusive Wine Tasting experience, sampling some of the finest vintages in the world paired with gourmet local cuisine.
We will spend the afternoon painting right on the estate. Daniel will instruct on capturing the structured, elegant lines of the rolling vineyards and the beautiful, historic Cape Dutch architecture bathed in the afternoon light.

Tuesday, September 14
After a final Winelands breakfast, we take a short domestic flight directly into the wild heart of the country. Upon arriving at Kapama Private Game Reserve, you will be welcomed into your ultra-luxurious safari suite.
We swap the lush greens of the Cape for the golden hues of the savanna. After our first exhilarating late-afternoon game drive, we will gather for an evening discussion on painting the unique textures of the bush.

Wednesday, September 15
The Golden Hour & The Big Five (
We fall into the timeless rhythm of the safari. Our days begin at dawn with private, open-air game drives tracking elephants, lions, and leopards as the sun rises over the Drakensberg mountains.
The midday hours are dedicated to immersive painting sessions overlooking the reserve. Daniel will focus heavily on capturing the piercing, brilliant African light, the atmospheric dust of the savanna, and the rich, earthy tones of the bushveld. Evenings conclude with sundowners in the bush and fireside critiques.

Thursday, September 16
Another exhilarating day tracking the iconic Big Five, this time perhaps focusing on the majestic landscapes and intricate details of the reserve. Between drives, enjoy a luxurious midday rest or a dip in the pool overlooking a bustling waterhole.
Today’s painting session dives deeper into the rich, earthy tones and complex textures of the environment. Daniel will guide you in painting the sculptural forms of ancient Acacia trees, the movement of the golden grasses, and the dramatic interplay of light and shadow during the late afternoon.

Friday, September 17
Our final full day in the wild. We will embark on one last morning tracking session, soaking in the sights and sounds of the savanna.
A final, comprehensive masterclass session to finish your pieces, followed by a spectacular farewell dinner served beneath the stars in a traditional outdoor boma.

Enjoy one final golden sunrise over the reserve and a hearty breakfast before we transfer you to the airstrip for your onward journey home, taking a portfolio of unforgettable canvases and memories with you.
Richie Carter was born and raised just outside of Kalispell, Montana. Being brought up in a rural community of Northwest Montana, he developed an early sense of adventure and creativity, as one does when the woods are your only playground. As a child, if he didn't have a pencil or crayon in his hand, he was building or making the latest idea he could conjure up, from tree houses to paper mâché sculptures. As Richie moved through school, it soon became apparent that he had a knack for drawing and painting. His high school art classes served as an inspiring foundation to his fascination with realism and working from direct observation. Just like many artists in the field, he quickly became infatuated with the works of the Old Masters. And while obtaining his BFA in Painting from The University of Montana, he spent a year abroad in Northern France studying the language, culture, and the rich tradition of painting. Upon graduating in 2012, Richie once again established his base in Kalispell, where he works from his studio.
"When I am not in my studio working on large-scale still life and landscape paintings, you can find me out on location gathering reference materials, from the backcountry of Montana, to the deserts of the Southwest, or on the cobbled streets of various European cities. I love to travel and meet people of different cultures, taking inspiration from a myriad of sources. Painting is a universal visual language that breaks down barriers, and I hope that, through my own work, it can help cultivate authentic human connection. My goal is to make impactful, striking, yet simplistic images that evoke emotion and allow a dialogue to take place between the rich tradition of realism and the contemporary reality of our time."
