Welcome to the Michelle Dunaway Master-Class
Workshop in South Africa
 23 September to 3 October 2022

Join us for a safe, authentic  African experience hosted by local art

organization Workshops in

SA with instruction

by master artist

Michelle Dunaway!

Starting in the Cape Winelands amidst beautiful scenery, we will spend our first day painting the figure in the landscape outdoors.  Michelle will demo and paint from life and give students instruction to students in this unique workshop.

We will then Journey inland for an exclusive experience—painting landscapes and having a wine tasting on the way to the ostrich capital of the world. We will visit Buffelsdrift, a Private Game Lodge where you will spend the rest of the day; you will have the amazing opportunity to brush and feed the Elephants on the reserve. After painting ostriches, and meerkats we will further our journey to a Luxury game reserve where we will have the opportunity to view the Big Five in their natural habitat. Our class will embark on private photos and sketching Safari in the early morning and beautiful sunset light.  Oct is springtime in South Africa, and there will be baby animals on view in their natural habitat. During these excursions, Michelle will discuss the importance of taking reference in the field, optimising your photography to compose paintings back in the studio, and combining images and life sketches to make an original studio painting from multiple references. This information has been gleaned from years of working in the field and composing paintings back in the studio, and this is the first time Michelle will be teaching this information in a workshop setting! Michelle will also do a landscape demonstration at the reserve between safaris and talk and demo about sketching animals from life and from photo reference gathered.

For the last three days, we will journey on a beautiful scenic drive from the game reserve to a famous winery where we will partake in a wine tasting tour, enjoy painting a model in the beautiful gardens and have a group dinner at a famous local restaurant.

The all-inclusive price covers all luxury accommodations, 10-day workshop instruction and model fees,  most meals ( breakfast, most lunches, and dinner ) and all private ground transportation to painting locations including to and from the airport.

Non-painting partners and photographer friends are most welcome to join there will be plenty for you!

Michelle Dunaway

Michelle Dunaway is an American artist whose paintings are revered for their bold brushwork yet sensitive portrayal of emotions that capture the human experience. Dunaway exhibited a strong penchant for drawing the human form from a young age and that fascination has continued throughout her life and career. Her artwork has been featured in international exhibitions and publications including Fine Art Connoisseur, Art of the West, International Artist, American Art Collector, Southwest Art, and American Artist.

Dunaway’s work has received numerous awards and honors including Finalist and Award of Exceptional Merit at the 2010 Portrait Society of America’s International Portrait Competition for her painting Katie and Jenni -The Daughters of Jane Seymour;  a Certificate of Excellence from the Portrait Society of America in 2014 and 2017; Finalist and Award of Exceptional Merit at the 2016 and 2108 Portrait Society of America's International Portrait Competition; and Finalist in the Art Renewal Center's ARC Salon Competition 2019 winning the American Legacy of Fine Art Award.

Although Dunaway paints and exhibits a variety of subject matter, her first love has always been portraiture. After studying anatomy and drawing at Art Center College of Design (Pasadena, CA), Dunaway continued her painting education by attending workshops with two prominent artists with whom she has become good friends over the years: Jeremy Lipking and Morgan Weistling. Both Lipking and Weistling encouraged Dunaway to pursue a career as a fine artist when they saw her work. Upon attending one of Lipking's very first workshops, Dunaway brought a painting in for the artist to critique. Lipking and his wife Danielle decided to purchase the painting for their collection. Lipking told Dunaway she was ready to be in galleries and showed the painting to the gallery where he exhibited in Beverly Hills and they subsequently invited Michelle to exhibit.

Dunaway receives invitations to give painting demonstrations, lecture, and teach internationally and these events attract artists who travel from around the world to study with her. Believing strongly in "passing on the torch" of  knowledge in painting, she takes time from her busy schedule of shows and exhibitions to accept these invitations when possible. "It is extremely important to me that the legacy of strong painting continues for future generations," Dunaway states. "I have always been passionate about pursing excellence in my own work and constantly growing as an artist, and I feel a strong calling to help others reach their full potential as well. For me, creating great art is about putting light into the world. It is of course capturing the light that falls on a subject and translating that luminosity into the painting, but it's also about shining light whenever possible through teaching and passing on wisdom."

The Klein Karoo is an oasis in a fertile valley surrounded by the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountain ranges.   Every road leading into Oudtshoorn follows a gloriously picturesque pass, all of which present you with a stunningly scenic drive through this unspoiled area.

Oudtshoorn is known for its ostrich farms and rests along the Route 62 wine route. It is called the ostrich capital of the world. If you live in South Africa you know Ostrich steak just too well.

We will have lunch here and give you time to explore some shops.

Arriving at Buffelsdrift no later than 2 pm for a very adventurous day.  You will have an elephant experience at 3 pm

You will want to bring your sketchbook along.  You will also have the opportunity to brush and feed them.

The three elephants were orphaned when the adults were poached. Our elephants come from circumstances that if we did not intervene they would not be alive today. We did not choose this life for them but we rather chose to give them the best possible life within our means with the best possible love and care. All our elephant excursions have a most informative educational approach.

We are fortunate that they ended up here at Buffelsdrift Game Lodge as they are truly gentle giants and have great personalities. Elephants are very affectionate and caring animals and you will immediately experience this when visiting them.

At 7m you will be going on a night safari.

The advantage of a night drive is that it provides access to nocturnal species that are rarely seen during the day and there is a greater probability of seeing them hunt at night. And you are promised to see the most beautiful night sky you could imagine. The two-hour night drive offers guests an opportunity to spot the elusive “Shy five” of Buffelsdrift Game Lodge – caracal, genet, porcupine, aardvark, and aardwolf.
