Day 6: Botlierskop

Today you have the option to choose a Game Drive ( 3 h) or a Horseback Safari (1 or 2 h) at 6 am. Exploring the diverse, fynbos-covered landscapes of the Botlierskop reserve on 4x4 Guided Game drive or horseback is a unique, South African experience.

Knowing that the horses themselves are truly South African and have developed from a long history in the Cape, makes the experience even more authentic. The beautiful Cape Horse was hardy and could survive on meager rations. It was a comfortable ride and had endurance, spirit, and heart still evident in its decedents today. As with all aspects of Botlierskop, perfection is strived for and their horses are no different. Botlierskop breeds their horses in the wild on the reserve and they are handpicked for performance and character. The horses are meticulously trained to be responsive and prepared for cross country trail riding. They are used not only for guest rides but also for working farm horses.

Taking part in a horse-back safari at Botlierskop allows you the incredible opportunity to explore usually-inaccessible game trails through hidden valleys, dense bush and canopied woods and get up close to the wildlife on the reserve. Knowing your surefooted steed is traversing the landscape of its ancestors- survivors of great expeditions, wars, and immense hardships- makes for a poignant, once-in-a-lifetime experience. You will have the opportunity to practice Plein Air painting with Lori from 9:00-12:00 on location

Oudtshoorn is the largest town of the Klein Karoo. It enjoys the largest number of sunny days of all South African towns, and while summer can be excruciatingly hot, winters are mostly mild and dry.

Oudtshoorn’s rich history is closely intertwined with the rise and fall of the ostrich industry. The once-thriving ostrich feather industry played a significant role in the transformation of the little village into the richest Ostrich Capital of the World. You will check in to Mooi Plaas a family-run working ostrich farm where you can enjoy the open spaces of the farm and the spectacular views of the magnificent end ever-changing the purple Swartberg mountains. Situated in a limestone ridge parallel to the well known Swartberg Mountains, you will find the finest dripstone caverns, with their vast halls and towering formations. If you are pregnant or suffer from claustrophobia, high blood pressure, asthma or any muscular ailments, this tour is NOT suitable for you. Please let us know there will be plenty for you to do instead. After this amazing experience, we will go to Buffelsdrift Private Game Lodge where you will spend the rest of the day, you will have the amazing opportunity to brush and feed the Elephants on the reserve. Our 3 African Elephants are orphans from the Kruger National Park. Their parents were poached. They would not survive on their own and were kept alive and we are fortunate that they ended up here at Buffelsdrift Game Lodge as they are truly gentle giants and have great personalities.
