Day 1: Stellenbosch


Upon arrival, you will personally meet the Tour Director,  resident of South Africa (Taléta).  From the airport, you will be taken to Stellenbosch to check-in at your hotel at 2 pm. In the afternoon you will join the welcome meeting at the hotel lobby with your fellow travelers,  Michelle and your Tour Director (Taléta). You will have your course orientation around the dinner table. Greet the traditional, special and delicious South African cuisine tonight on a group dinner at Blaauwklippen.

Day 2: Stellenbosch


Full Painting day at Blaauwklippen Wine Farm. Michelle will demonstrate painting the model in nature and then students will paint the same model with one on one instruction from Michelle 

Founded in 1682, Blaauwklippen is the second oldest wine farm in South Africa.  Immerse yourself in a rich 350-year heritage that is thoughtfully preserved.

Day 3: Oudshoorn


Buffelsdrift Private Game Lodge day excursion. Visit with, sketch and feed elephants!

Wake up to the beautiful Blaauwklippen and enjoy the breath-taking view of the early morning with breakfast in the garden.
After having breakfast we will journey Buffelsdrift Private Game Lodge where you will spend the rest of the day, you will have the amazing opportunity to brush and feed the Elephants on the reserve. Our 3 African Elephants are orphans from the Kruger National Park. Their parents were poached. They would not survive on their own and were kept alive and we are fortunate that they ended up here at Buffelsdrift Game Lodge as they are truly gentle giants and have great personalities. Elephants are very affectionate and caring animals. You will immediately experience this when visiting ours. You are welcome to ask our elephant guides as many questions as you like. We will take our painting equipment to experience painting on location.

Day 4: Oudtshoorn


Painting Day with special morning sketching excursion. 
We will venture out on a short safari in the morning to see the many meerkats in the area. We will take sketchbooks in case there is a  possibility to sketch them from life! 

On sunny mornings our meerkats wake up on time, but conditions such as rain and cold overcast mornings can delay the meerkats to emerge from their burrows for the morning. Meerkats prefer clear sunny mornings.  Thus, in the event of the above-mentioned weather conditions, there is a possibility that we will not see the meerkats or that the meerkat safari can be canceled and we will go on a normal safari instead. 
After lunch, we check in to the Old Mill, a family-run working ostrich farm where you can enjoy the open spaces of the farm and the spectacular views of the magnificent end ever-changing the purple Swartberg mountains. 
In the afternoon Michelle and the class will paint a model.

 • Key Highlights: Meerkat Game Drive Sketching on location and afternoon Painting session    
     with Michelle.

Day 5: Oudtshoorn

  Half-day of painting with special optional and included excursion.
Today we will visit the Cango Caves 29km from Oudtshoorn, at the head of the picturesque Cango Valley, lies the spectacular underground wonder of the Klein Karoo. Situated in a limestone ridge parallel to the well known Swartberg Mountains, you will find the finest dripstone caverns, with their vast halls and towering formations.

In the afternoon Michelle and the class will paint a model in the landscape

 • Key Highlights: Cango caves (Optional) Painting the model outdoors with Michelle, seeing wild        



* Please note, If you are pregnant or suffer from claustrophobia, high blood pressure, asthma or any muscular ailments, this tour of the caves may not suitable for you. Please let us know there will be plenty for you to do instead. You may have a free morning or paint the landscape on location at the farm.

Day 6: Botlierskop

With the magnificent Outeniqua Mountains as a backdrop and sweeping views out over the glistening Indian Ocean below, lies Botlierskop Private Game Reserve. Just an hour's drive from Oudshoorn, on South Africa’s scenic Garden Route.
Come and share the bounty and breath-taking beauty this 4,200-hectare reserve has to offer. Botlierskop Game Reserve will ensure you enjoy a unique South African Safari Experience, with luxury accommodation. This gracious family-owned and privately-operated game reserve is malaria-free and home to four of the Big 5 (lion, elephant, buffalo and
rhino) as well as a host of antelope, including rare black impala, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, hippo and more. 
All extra activities on this day will be for your own expense. Please let us know should we book a spa treatment for you in advance.

 • Hotel: Check-in 2 pm Botlierskop private game reserve 5*
 • Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner
 • Key Highlights: Relaxing free time at Botlierskop or painting on your own.


Day 7: Botlierskop


Today you have the option to choose a Game Drive ( 3 h) or a Horseback Safari (1 or 2 h) at 6 am. Exploring the diverse, fynbos-covered landscapes of the Botlierskop reserve on 4x4 Guided Game drive or horseback is a unique, South African experience. 
You will have the opportunity to practice Plein Air painting with Michelle from 9 to 10 am and paint on your own in the afternoon or go on another excursion or relax.

Michelle will offer critiques if you wish of work you have done on your own the last day of the workshop

 • Key Highlights: Game Drive (includes snacks and drinks) or Horseback Safari ( only experienced riders) Painting the landscape, Marimba drum players.



Day 8: Stellenbosch

Today after having your last optional game drive at 6 am and after having breakfast we will journey back to Stellenbosch.

 • Key Highlights: Dinner at Restaurant in Stellenbosch, optional Safari game drive 


Day 9: Stellenbosch


Wake up to the beautiful Blaauwklippen and enjoy the breath-taking view of the early morning Stellenbosch mountain. You will first get the opportunity to paint the vineyards. Spring is on our doorstep and the fynbos and flowers are in full bloom. After having lunch at the Tokara deli we will head to a private garden overlooking the Winelands to paint one of the most beautiful views of our area at sunset with a model.

Day 10: Stellenbosch


Today will be our last full day to paint a model on the estate alongside Michelle. You will also have enough time for the completion and a private critique with Michelle of your work achieved during the course and also of images of studio work you might want advice on. Michelle will paint alongside the class in the morning. The class will continue painting on the grounds in the afternoon while Michelle spends time with each student alone answering any final questions and giving critiques and advice individualized for each artist

Day 11: Stellenbosch


Our wonderful adventure comes to an end after breakfast. Make sure to bid farewell to newfound friends and exchange numbers before checking-out of the hotel (at 11:00). Complimentary airport transfers are available, have a safe and smooth journey!
